£2,000,000 Public Bench
Do I look like I'm made of money?
Designed in response the RIBA Pews and Perches competition which sought to help regenerate the Royal Docks in East London as part of the Olympic Legacy in 2012. The £40 budget for the winning design was clearly the constraining factor within the brief. We joked about how we could bring the greatest material value to the bench while passing comment on the legacy of the Olympics and its hollow promises for London post-games. The final bench, cast from a shredded £1.61million, does exactly this at over ten thousand times the original budget. The bench form is intentionally recognisable to draw focus to its materiality, yet it retains a playful quality: both in its form and its sense of abandonment - an interior furnishing set outdoors to perish in the rain.
